M/C – Thomas Kendrick. Presenters: Kelly McDonald, Les DeSouza, and Wesley Higgins
Most of the Christian world observes a Sabbath day on Sunday. Some Christian leaders are saying that while corporate worship with other believers is necessary and part of obedience, the day that your church body chooses to worship is not that significant. Bible verses in Colossians 2:14-17 and Romans 14:5-6 are used to say that it does not matter whether the worship day is on Saturday or Sunday. What does the Bible teach? During this study session we sought answers to the following questions:
- When did many in the early church switch to worship on Sunday rather than on Sabbath? What were the factors in the Roman empire that encouraged that move?
- Does the day of our Sabbath observance matter? What are Colossians 2 and Romans 14 saying about Sabbath observance?
- What are the Scriptural reasons for observing Sabbath on Saturday? How do we present the Sabbath as Saturday in a spirit of meekness (Galatians 6:1)?
- How can we strengthen our faith through our celebration of the Sabbath? A discussion of Mark 2:24-28 and Isaiah 58:13,14.
- What are the specific Biblical guidelines that should be followed to properly observe and respect the Sabbath instead of arbitrary rules that each church might establish on their own based upon custom and/or tradition.
