The Bible is the timeless word of God. It was miraculously given to us. The truthfulness
of the Bible is tied to the character of God. We believe the Bible is truthful because the
giver of the Bible is truthful. If God has breathed out his word, then it is truthful.

Because the Bible is breathed out by God, we say that the Bible is our authority for
knowing about God. It is our authority for knowing about man’s position before a holy
God, and for knowing how we can come into relationship with God. It is our authority for
knowing God’s standards of obedience for mankind.

Scripture is also described as having veracity. Synonyms for veracity include accuracy
and truthfulness. Veracity is the power of conveying truth. Scripture is described as
having veracity because it is truthful and accurate.

Scripture is also described as being inerrant. Bible inerrancy refers to the complete
truthfulness of Scripture. It is based on the teaching of the Bible about inspiration.

We see evidence of the authority of the Bible through the many references to Old
Testament scripture by the New Testament writers. We see evidence of the veracity of
Scripture through fulfilled prophecies of the Old Testament. We see the evidence of
inerrancy through how Jesus approaches the Scriptures as true and factual.

The truthfulness of the Bible and the authority of the Bible is under attack today from
many directions. It is being attacked when those speaking from the pulpit do not view it
as truth and do not use it in their sermons. It is being attacked by Christians who do not
believe in the absolute truths taught in Scripture. When believers exchange the values
taught in the Bible for values proclaimed as important by our society, the truthfulness of
the Bible is under attack. And Scripture is attacked by slander when the Bible is spoken
of as something less than God’s word. We are to contend for the authority of Scripture
just like we contend for our faith in Jesus as the resurrection and the life.

During this weekend, we will look at why we can know God’s word is trustworthy and
what it means when we say that it has authority. Let’s stand fast for the truthfulness and
authority of Scripture!
