Wounded for Our Transgressions – Daily Devotional – Lesson 13

Sunday – Worship & Wavering in Galilee: Matthew 28:16-17
Obviously, the remaining eleven original disciples journeyed to Galilee sometime after Jesus’ second appearance in the upper room (when Jesus confronted Thomas). Despite Jesus’ former post-resurrection appearances, some are still wavering in their faith. Whether this event was before or after the “seven” dining with Jesus by the Sea of Galilee is unclear. Some speculate that it was on this occasion that Jesus appeared to more than 500 followers (1 Corinthians 15:6).

Monday – The Great Declaration: Matthew 28:18
The word “given,” means in the Greek “to be granted.” Jesus already had the power to do miracles and to forgive sins. He had been recognized as a “king,” however His kingdom before the cross had not previously been with outward evidence (Luke 17:20). But in overcoming the grave, He had now fully come into His governmental power and authority. As Lord and Christ, He, appoints offices and officers in His kingdom, bestows gifts upon men, and institutes ordinances to be observed until His return. Jesus overcame sin, death, the world, and the devil, and now reigns with all authority until all of His enemies are made subject to Him.

Tuesday – The Great Commission: Matthew 28:19-20
The word, “Go,” is understood as, “As you are going…” in the Greek. The command was not to go, but that wherever and whenever they went, to be engaged in teaching and baptizing. The primary calling of every believer is to promote the Kingdom of God and to perpetuate the faith by sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Believers are to teach people to “observe,” or more clearly, to “hold fast,” the truths that Jesus taught. This should be the main purpose and primary focus of the life of every believer! To baptize “in the name…” means “in the authority and character” of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Wednesday – These Signs Mark 16:15-18
The commission to share the gospel and teach the Kingdom of God is similar to Matthew 28:19-20. Mark’s writing reveals five evidences that would accompany the faithful believer: (1) authority over demons; (2) speaking in “unacquired” tongues; (3) removing or binding threatening influences (serpents); (4) bodily protection from harm; and (5) wielding the healing virtue of Christ.

Thursday – Words of Assurance Luke 24:44-49; Acts 1:1-8
Jesus ended His teaching by assuring His followers that all had transpired in accordance of the Father’s eternal plan, in the perfect fulfillment of all the scriptures formerly prophesied concerning His life, ministry, and passion. His final words remind them of the sending of the Holy Spirit to empower them to live faithfully, and to spread the gospel throughout the world.

Friday – Christ’s Ascension: Mark 16:19; Luke 24:50-51; Acts 1:9-11
From Bethany, on the eastern declivity of the Mount of Olives, Jesus ascended in the presence of His disciples. Did He assure them added favor in this benediction, or commend them to the protection and guidance of God? Neither is it easy to comprehend what the disciples felt as they watched the Lord ascend into the clouds, but the two angels (Acts 1:10-11) spoke further reassurance to them that Christ would return at the appointed time, and that His return would be in the same manner as His ascension.

Saturday – The Early Church Begins: Mark 16:20; Luke 24:52-53; Acts 1:12-14
Upon Jesus’ departure, His followers gained a fresh expectancy, a renewed vision for ministry, a new found joy, and a deeper commitment to prayer for knowing God’s specific will. Undoubtedly, they found great encouragement by drawing close together. Through the centuries, the faithful in Christ have passed on the torch of truth to all who would believe. May God help us to remain faithful!
