Memory Verse: “Whoever offers praise glorifies Me; and to him who orders his conduct aright I will show the salvation of God.” Psalm 50:23
Scripture Reading: James 3
Introduction:
The spoken word is the most powerful of all human methods of expression. If you doubt this just take a look at the man or woman gifted in the art of public speaking. Words are the stock in trade of the politician, the salesman, the entertainer, or a pastor, just to name a few. The skilled articulator beyond a doubt has the ability to persuade and change the minds of people. This talent can be used for good, such as with exhortations of one who speaks on behalf of God. Often, though, words are used for harmful or deceitful purposes. Consider the fiery half-truths and outright lies of the leaders who gain power by appealing to people’s emotions and prejudices for selfish reasons; such as Adolf Hitler, who rose to power as chancellor and dictator of Nazi Germany by appealing to the people’s strong sense of national pride.
Evil produces confusion while on the other hand, God brings harmony and wisdom. The main characteristic of godly wisdom is that it is pure, free from defilement. An uncontrolled tongue can defile the whole body or the whole person. The Christian is cautioned by the Scriptures to use his tongue with care. It should be used to the glory of God rather than gossiping or mischief. Justly or unjustly, we are rated according to our words. The Scriptures plainly say that “…out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34b).
What we say is what people believe us to mean; therefore, it behooves us to select our words with great care. The person who possesses godly wisdom will meekly show it with works and not just with words. True wisdom is sincere and unpretentious, and a word spoken unthinkingly can never be recalled, and the damage caused by a thoughtless remark can very well be endless.
